Are you ready for a nighttime adventure? El Salvador has the privilege of being one of the world's most important, nocturnal nesting sites for the endangered Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata). Their nests have been recorded along the Pacific coast stretching from Baja California, Mexico, in the north, to the beaches of Ecuador in the south.
In the Los Cóbanos Protected Area, the Hawksbill, along with 3 other of the world's 7 endangered sea turtle species, wait until dark and then slowly emerge from the black ocean to dig nests in the beach and lay their eggs, between the months of May and September (peak months: August & September).
During the nesting, you may have the opportunity to participate in conservation efforts, which include a measuring and monitoring process carried out by the beach community--an absolutely remarkable experience to share with your friends and family!
